OpenAI says small and medium-sized businesses are now a material share of its ad business, five months after Ads Manager opened.

OpenAI said on Aug. 31 that ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days (company-reported) and is used by tens of thousands of advertisers. Self-serve buying through Ads Manager expanded to India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

OpenAI says Ads Manager, introduced in May, opened the platform to SMBs; CPC and outcome-optimized bidding now account for most campaigns; and Pixel and Conversions API underpin measurement. Ads are shown to Free and Go users and are labelled and separate from answers.

Your checklist

  • Check Ads Manager availability for Canada on OpenAI’s help page before pitching it.
  • Only test with tracking (pixel or Conversions API) in place.
  • Frame it to clients as an experiment with a fixed budget and end date.
